I've got several recipes for date squares dating from 1928 Canada & to the USA on 1930 but none are like you described. The only thing I can think of are the date hand pies that I make. It's the only thing that is cooked on the stove then stuffed into dough? Let me know if you want my recipe. I love dates & figs so there's not many recipes I don't have. Good luck!
